Derived Contrasts in Scottish English: An EEG Study
نویسندگان
چکیده
We assessed the Gradient Phonemicity Hypothesis by testing whether a duration-based derived contrast in Scottish English can be seen phonemic just as a contrast based on vowel quality. We examined the electrophysiological correlates of the perception of such contrasts in native Scottish and French speakers. Results revealed differences between the two groups, mostly in the perception of durationbased contrasts and suggest that derived contrasts may be regarded as phonemic contrasts.

The Perception of a Derived Contrast in Scottish English
This paper reports on ongoing experiments related to the perception of atypical phonological contrasts. It was hypothesized that the quasiphonemic status of a derived contrast in Scottish English would induce atypical responses, yielding behavioural correlates with intermediate values between phonemicity and allophony. The results show that some of the Scottish participants produce identificati...
متن کاملDevelopmental patterns in the adult L2 acquisition of new contrasts: the acoustic cue weighting in the perception of Scottish tense/lax vowels by Spanish speakers
Part of the phonology of a language consists of sound distinctions that the speakers perceive and produce. These sound distinctions, in turn, are signalled by a number of sub-properties that integrate to constitute phonological contrasts. There is a many-to-one relation between the properties that signal a contrast and the contrast itself (Repp 1984). The information or sub-properties that sign...
متن کاملAn Investigation of the Relationship between Gender and Different Strategies of Expressing Request in English and Persian Films
The main objective of the present study is to elaborate the contrasts between males and females in their use of different strategies of request in English and Persian and ascertain the degree to which independent variables like gender and language affect the application of these strategies during informal communication.Furthermore, it offers comparable corpora which provide a good basis for cro...
متن کاملPreaspirated stops in the English of Scottish Gaelic-English bilinguals
Preaspirated voiceless stops, a well-documented feature of Scottish Gaelic, have also been anecdotally observed in the English spoken in the Scottish Hebrides island chain. This paper presents the first sociophonetic study of preaspirated stops in Hebrides English. Analysis of speech produced by 24 male and female Gaelic-English bilinguals aged 19-75 found that, while most participants produced...
متن کاملVowel Duration in Scottish English Speaking Children
In most English accents vowel length is approximately 50% greater before a voiced consonant than before its voiceless cognate (the ‘Voicing Effect’). In Scottish English it is conditioned by the ‘Scottish Vowel Length Rule’. The lengthening environments of this rule overlap with those of the Voicing Effect. The phonetic details of the Scottish Vowel Length Rule and its relationship with the Voi...
